Tools of the trade:
Collapse Sub discussionZsuzsa Mogyorosi Hi all,
I'm currently using the Ladybug plugin to do solar analysis, I followed the instructions in the video:Ladybug Grasshopper Tutorial (Links to an external site.)
I was wondering if anyone uses any other methods. The problem I found is that it only gives maximum irradiation for a year, not a cumulative one for a period of time.
I'm also struggling with the visualization and changing between wireframe and rendered mode. Does anyone come across a good training video for this?
Kind regards,
Zsuzsa
Collapse Sub discussionGuillermo Aranda-Mena Dear Zsuzsa, we finally got news from Luisa. She is moving from the UK to Italy thus the little delay. :..but the info looks great, I hope is useful to you/others in the class.
I will alo ask my research student on DIVA...we are only starting to look at it.
As Luisa says, “have fun playing with the tools” :)
Have a nice weekend,
Guillermo.
“Hi Professor!
So sorry for the very late reply got lost between holidays, organising my move back and work. I am soo glad the students liked my presentation and want to explore the world or parametric more :)In terms of specific grasshopper tools, I normally use and therefore would recommend ladybug and honeybee which are the prevailing free plug-ins for daylight, solar and energy analysis. The developers are really cool and provide a lot of support as well as preset tools. For example, here the students can look up different workflows to start setting up simulations:In terms of actual optimisation I generally have used octopus or galapagos, that both use optimisation criteria to create a pareto front curve of results:
- Another cool tool, web-based also developed by on of the developers of honeybee/ladybug when he were still part of Thorton Tomassetti is Design Explorer, which is a nice tool to explore simple box model:http://core.thorntontomasetti.com/design-explorer/ (Links to an external site.) (Tutorials here: http://www.mpendesign.com/category/tutorial/ (Links to an external site.))I hope your students have fun playing with these tools, looking forward to hearing updates on what they have liked most :)All the best,Luisa”
Collapse Sub discussionZsuzsa Mogyorosi Hi Guillermo,
Thank you and thank you for Luisa for her response, I hope everything went well with the moving. I will look into the sources later this week/over the weekend and let you know how I find them.
Kind regards,
Collapse Sub discussionZsuzsa Mogyorosi Hi,
Has anyone had a go at using different materials in Rhino? I've been googling a bit about it and I see that there are options for rendering but I'm a bit unsure on how these would be considered in the analyses.
Kind regards,
Zsuzsa
Collapse Sub discussionZsuzsa Mogyorosi Hi All,
I came across this youtube series on how to use Honeybee:

Hope this helps.
Kind regards,
Zsuzsa

Edited by Guillermo Aranda-Mena on 3 Aug at 11:19Guillermo Aranda-Mena Please note that the above Climate Consultant page is down: http://www.energy-design-tools.aud.ucla.edu/ (Links to an external site.)(UCLA, California). It was useful for passive design calculations.
Similar site https://comfort.cbe.berkeley.edu/other_tools (Links to an external site.) . - this focuses more on internal comfort calculations - albeit, as a consequence of your facade design considerations, fenestration and ventilation strategies though.
